Ercolania from Oregon, USA

July 5, 2000
From: Cynthia Trowbridge

Dear Bill,

I have a query... I took these photos over 10 years ago (no specimen preserved). In the light of the discussion about Ercolania spp. and other small, black and white ascoglossans, I dug these old images out of my files.

The animal is a few mm long and was on the green alga Codium setchellii on the central coast of Oregon, USA. It looks a lot like Ercolania felina from New Zealand and a bit like Ercolania boodleae from Asia. No, I do not have a preserved specimen (bad habit of ecologists!). I found this animal only by
accident. I am not at all sure what it might be. It was very energetic, zipping around my dish. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Cordially,

Cynthia
