Burn (1966) reviewed the species of Aphelodoris in southern Australia and considered there were at least six recognisable species. Aphelodoris lawsae, A. varia and A. rossquicki are linked by traces of a brown reticulate pattern on the mantle, which in this species is a dark brown. See A. rossquicki for a comparison.
