Pink Hydatina? from Egyptiam Red Sea

July 5, 2005
From: Mary Lyn Rusmore-Villaume

The shell is a beautiful transparent pink. The photos don't show the color well at all. I have tentatively called it a Hydatina.

Locality: Wadi Lahmi, Egypt, Red Sea. Depth: beach collected. Length: 5 mm. muddy bay. Photographer: Mary Lyn Villaume

Anyone know what this is?

Dear Mary Lyn,
This is the shell of a species of Bullina, a genus of bubble shells which are closely related to Hydatina. It has a very sunken spire, which is unusual in the genus, but its small size suggests it is a juvenile. I don't think we know this genus well enough to be able to give you a species identity.
Best wishes,
Bill Rudman
