The mantle is translucent yellowish with scattered darker spots. There is a white line around the edge of the raised gill pocket. Anteriorly, the white line runs some distance forward along the midline of the mantle. The mantle is covered in small globose tubercles, each with a ring of spicules around the base. The colour and spiculate tubercles give it the appearance of the sponge Hymeniacidon sanguinea on which it feeds. The penis is armed with small spines, The simply hamate radular teeth are arranged in wide rows. [radular formula of holotype 76 x (95-110)-0- (110-95}].

Carminodoris boucheti from Strait of Gibraltar

October 14, 2002
From: Alma Sanchez

Dear Dr. Rudman,
Recently, I collected four specimens of Carminodoris boucheti Ortea, 1979, from the Strait of Gibraltar (Southern Spain) with a bathymetric range between approximately 6- 10 meters at depth under stones. This specimen was collected in May, 2002 at 6 m. depth. Size: 22mm long. Place: La Seca Reef (Tr. LSE)

Originally described from Asturias (type locality: La Concha de Artedo), North coast of Spain, this species, in the Mediterranean Sea, has been cited in the Catalonian littoral, Spain, (Ballesteros & Ortea, 1981) and in Italian coast of Sardinia ( Perrone & Doneddu, 1997). I think this record extends the geographical range of this species, which had never before been documented in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The specimen has been identified from the photo by Drs. Lucas Cervera, Jesus Ortea and Angel Valdes.

Dear Alma,
Thanks very much. From the photo this looks very like a species of Jorunna so its good to get such an 'expertly' identified pair of photos. I see from Ortea's 1980 description that the spicules on the caryophyllidia are less prominent than in species of Jorunna. of course there are anatomical differences, such as the microscopic hooks on the penis in Carminodoris, rather than the penial style found in Jorunna. Also in Carminodoris there are many more teeth in each row than in Jorunna.
Best wishes,
Bill Rudman
