Coryphella or Flabellina

April 12, 2000
From: Sylvain Le Bris

Hi

I would like to know the right name between:

Coryphella cynara (Marcus & Marcus, 1967) and Flabellina cynara (Marcus & Marcus, 1967)
Coryphella gracilis (Alder & Hancock, 1844) and Flabellina gracilis (Alder & Hancock, 1844)
Corypella verrucosa (Sars M., 1829) and Flabellina verrucosa (Sars M., 1829)

Thanks
Sylvain Le Bris

Dear Sylvain,
There has been some debate over whether the genera Flabellina and Coryphella have enough distinct differences to warrant keeping them as separate genera. At present most authors consider that it is best to 'lump' them into the oldest genus Flabellina. So the 'correct' name for each species is:

Flabellina gracilis (Alder & Hancock, 1844)[Eolis]
Flabellina verrucosa (Sars M., 1829) [Eolidia]
Flabellina cynara (Marcus & Marcus, 1967) [Coryphella]

You will note that all the author's names are in 'brackets' or 'parentheses'. This is a convention we use in scientific names to show that the genus we now place the species in is different from that of the original author. I have put the original genus name in square brackets after each name.

Best wishes,
Bill Rudman.

Re: Flabellinid genera Samla and Tularia

Dear Bill:

I hope someone can help me with my flabellinid questions.

The Millard's reference is as follows:

- Victor Millard. 1997. CLASSIFICATION OF MOLLUSCA. A classification of World Wide Mollusca. Rhine Road, South Africa. 544pp.

The author sales the book itself. His e-mail address is: millardv@sabc.co.za

The classification reachs the genus level, including synonymy of the different taxa.

Cheers.

Lucas.

Thanks Lucas,
I hadn't heard of this publication.

Re: Flabellinid genera Samla and Tularia

Dear Bill:

Thank you for your reply. It will help me. According to this, even if Tularia is not considered as a synonym of Flabellina, it can be considered within the Flabellinidae, as suggested by Miller?

Following the Millard's book (1997) and doing the appropiate corrections, the valid genera of Flabellinidae would be: Flabellina, Calmella, Chlamylla and Tularia. Am I overlooking someone else?

Thank you.

Lucas.

Dear Lucas,
Can I have a reference to Millard, 1997 please? Concerning the flabellinid genera, I'll leave that for someone else to answer.
Cheers,
Bill Rudman.

Flabellinid genera Samla and Tularia

March 2, 2000
From: Juan Lucas Cervera

Dear Bill:

I would like to know if the Flabellinid genera Samla Bergh, 1900 and Tularia Burn, 1966 are considered valid still.

Thank you.
Lucas.

Cervera, J.L., 2000 (Mar 2) Flabellinid genera Samla and Tularia. [Message in] Sea Slug Forum. Australian Museum, Sydney. Available from http://www.seaslugforum.net/find/2000

Dear Lucas,
The type species of Samla is Samla annuligera Bergh, 1900 which is generally considered to be a synonym of Flabellina bicolor. Samla is therefore a synonym of Flabellina Voigt, 1834.

Reference: Gosliner, T.M. & Willan, R.C. (1991) Review of the Flabellinidae (Nudibranchia: Aeolidacea) from the Tropical Indo-Pacific, with the descriptions of five new species. The Veliger, 34(2): 97-133.

Tularia was erected by Burn (1966) for an interesting aeolid from southern Australia with a radula very similar to that of Eubranchus with a broad rectangular lateral tooth rather than triangular lateral tooth. Miller (1971) re-described Tularia bractea, the type species, and argued that it was a flabellind not a eubranchid. There is no suggestion that Tularia is a synonym of Flabellina. Unfortunately I don't have a good photo of T. bractea to post on the Forum.

Bill Rudman.
