Siphopteron from Hachijo Island, Japan

April 28, 2002
From: Shouichi Kato

Dear Bill,
I found this Siphopteron in a rocky area, on inshore reefs at 2m. Hachijo Island, Japan

Some animals were found on several days. They are very small, 5mm in max.
Would you identify this orange animal?

Best regards,
S. Kato

Dear Shouichi,
From the shape of the siphon, I suspect this animal is a species of Gastropteron rather than Siphopteron, but whatever it is, it is not one that I am familiar with. The only red one I can recall is the beautiful Gastropteron rubrum from the Mediterranean.
Best wishes,
Bill Rudman
