Banc Gail, SW Lagoon, New Caledonia. TOP: 33m, 25mm long preserved, April 1990. LOWER: 30m, March 1988. PHOTOS: Pierre Laboute.

The colour pattern of this Hypselodoris differs from other pink chromodorids in having a broad outer cream or yellow mantle border and a narrow inner line of opaque white. It has similarities in colour to Thorunna speciosus but their anatomy is quite different.

Here is the photo of Hypselodoris flavomarginata I mentioned in an earlier message.

The locality details are: Espiritu Santo Island, Vanuatu in Oct 1998. It was feeding on sponge in 18m among coral rubble. PHOTO: James Stenhouse.

Thanks Vinka,
It is certainly a beautiful animal. I am afraid the scans I am using at the top of the page don't do justice to the animal or to Pierre Laboute's photos. Any further interesting finds from Vanuatu would be very welcome.
Best wishes,
Bill Rudman.

Dear Bill

We have sighted a Hypselodoris flavomarginata on Espiritu Santo Island, Vanuatu in Oct 1998. It was feeding on sponge in 18m among coral rubble. One of the most beautiful nudibranchs we have ever seen! Bright candy pink with a thick white margin and maroon gills and rhinophores. We have photos but no scanner.

Dear Vinka,
Thanks for the message about H. flavomarginata. I would very much like to put a photo of your animal on the Forum. If you were willing to send me a print or a slide I can scan it here and return it to you. By publishing a photo with sightings such as yours it gives the record great scientific value - almost as good as having the specimen - because other experts can confirm the identification themselves.

I am about to go to Italy for a couple of weeks but I will be back mid June. If you can send a photo, could you please address it to me at:

Best wishes,
Bill Rudman.

Have you a pic of Hypselodoris flavomarginata?

Bill:
Congratulations on the latest recognition of your work with opisthobranchs - Hypselodoris rudmani Gosliner & Johnson, 1999.

This recent paper discusses a number of species I'm unfamiliar with. I was wondering if you can post a photo of your H. flavomarginata?
Thanks much,

Dave Behrens

Dear Dave,
Thanks for the congratulations Dave but they really should go to the authors Terry & Rebecca for their wonderful work. I also received a copy of their paper a couple of weeks ago and have been meaning to publish a comment about it and change a couple of identifications on the Slug Site as a result ... but there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day! Perhaps if I'm lucky they will send me a photo of H. rudmani for the Forum.

I have posted a couple of Pierre Laboute's pictures of Hypselodoris flavomarginata at the top of this page I would be interested in any sightings of it outside New Caledonia.

Best wishes,
Bill Rudman.
