Tylodina corticalis? from South Korea

October 26, 2006
From: Dong Bum Koh

Dear Bill,

I have received these unexpected photos from Ok Soo Kim of what I think is Tylodina corticalis.

Locality: Geo Moon Do (Island), 10m, Jeon Nam Prov., South Sea of Korea, 25 August 2006, -. Length: Total length 15mm. Photographer: Ok Soo Kim [www.okscuba.co.kr]

We can see the prominent radial ribbing shell on dosum.

Best regards,
Dong Bum Koh

Dear Koh,
This is indeed an interesting find. As far as I know it is only the second record of a species of Tylodina from the northwest Pacific. The only other record is the one we have on the Forum from Japan [Tylodina sp. 1 ]. It is possibly  Tylodina fungina from the northeast Pacific, although as you suggest, the radial ribbing on the shell is more similar to T. corticalis from southern Australia. However the shell in T. corticalis can be either smooth or ribbed so it is possible T. fungina has a similar variability. Then again it could be an unnamed species.

Best wishes,
Bill Rudman

Dear Bill,
This is the same individual from different angle. I feel the mantle edge is rather crenulate then smooth.

Thanks Nishina,
I guess we can only be sure when its anatomy is looked at. Perhaps Richard Willan can give us an opinion from your photos

Dear Nishina,
This is indeed another interesting find. Until the recent photo of Tylodina sp. from Okinawa (Hamatani, 2000), I know of no record of Tylodina or the similar Anidolyta from the NW Pacific.

I am not sure if your animal is a species of Tylodina or Anidolyta as they can only be distinguished anatomically. The mantle edge is said to be crenulate in Anidolyta and smooth in Tylodina but again I can't see the mantle edge in your photos. I very much doubt that it is the eastern Pacific species Tylodina fungina. The shape of the rhinophores seem more elaborate than the other species illustrated on the Forum so it is possibly an unnamed species. Perhaps Richard Willan who has studied these genera, can give us a comment.
