Feeding record for Hypselodoris iacula

Here is a record of Hypselodoris iacula and its food sponge. The animal and sponge were collected and photographed by David Brunckhorst during field work he undertook to collect specimens for his revision of the Phyllidiidae.

Locality: Phi Phi Island, sthn Thailand, 7-15 m, with sponge. 25 November 1989. AM C162381. Photo: D.J. Brunckhorst

The sponge is a species of the dysideid genus Euryspongia, most probably the same species as that eaten by Hypselodoris purpureomaculosa [see message #19243]. This is the first record we have of this species feeding.

Hi Bill,
This gorgeous animal is called a "magical" Hypselodoris in Coleman's book. Has it been described? [July, 2002]

Location: Nudi falls, Lembeh Straight, North Suluwesi, Indonesia.
Depth: 40 feet
Length: 10 cm.

Dear Marli,
This is Hypselodoris iacula. Your animal is more like the one illustrated in the original description, than the ones already on the Forum, which have a more distinctive white reticulate pattern.

Hi Bill,
Here is another beauty from Sulawesi. I photographed it crawling over a sand patch at "Pulau Putus" in Lembeh Strait Aug. 8, 2001. This dive site is a coral reef slope on the Lembeh Island side at the far end of the strait. It was about 5 cm long and about 15 meters deep.
Is it a recognized species?

Dear Narongpon,
Your photo is of Hypselodoris iacula Gosliner & Johnson, 1999 which was only recently described from the Philippines and Indonesia. Your animal has a much more concentrated network of white on the mantle than illustrated by Gosliner & Johnson, but I am sure it is the same species.

I would be happy to look at other photos you have of opisthobranchs from Thailand.
